A favorite destination of locals, vacationers and snowbirds is Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island, located just north of Lovers Key State Park on the Gulf of Mexico. Its long swath of white sandy beach is dotted with island-style homes and luxury condos. Spectacular sunsets are rampant and known to happen daily, so be advised to have sandals and camera ready at all times.
While half the island is beachside, the other is pure boating pleasure with a lacework of Gulf-access canals off bay waters that offer quick and easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway. You can go south to Naples or north to Sanibel/Captiva and east via the Caloosahatchee River to Lake Okeechobee to Miami and beyond. Living on the bay side of the island offers breathtaking views of natural Florida.
